The painted rocks are perhaps the most famous element of Tafraut's granite landscape. They were originally colored in 1984 by Belgian craftsman Jean Verame with the help of the Tafraout fire brigade and 18 tons of blue, pink, red and black paint, this particular and controversial work of art is always amazed, questioned and deplored today despite significant alteration over time.
The rocks have been repainted in recent years to restore some of their former glory, and in 2016, it is planned to open a small cafe on the site. This is part of a larger project that will see irrigation and extensive cultivation of fruits and vegetables in the area.
